About Picture by Pieces
Picture by Pieces is a timed picture-reassembly puzzle where scrambled image tiles must be swapped back into their correct positions. Each level gives you 60 seconds to reconstruct the picture while keeping your move count low. Completing levels earns stars and a score, while later stages use larger grids and require more pieces to be arranged correctly.
The primary objective is to reconstruct the scrambled picture by placing every tile in its correct position before the 60-second timer reaches zero.
Secondary goals are to:
- Complete levels using fewer moves.
- Finish with more time remaining.
- Earn up to three stars.
- Achieve higher level scores.
- Unlock and complete all 24 levels.
Picture by Pieces is a timed tile-swapping puzzle built around reconstructing procedurally generated pictures. Each level presents a scrambled image divided into a square grid, and your task is to restore every piece to its original position before the 60-second countdown expires.
To make a move, select one tile and then select another tile to swap their positions. Mouse players can also drag a tile to another position. Every swap increases the move counter, and the game automatically checks the board after each completed swap. An incorrect arrangement produces an on-screen notification, while a correctly reconstructed picture completes the level.
The game contains 24 levels, beginning with 3×3 grids and progressing through 4×4, 5×5, and 6×6 puzzles. A preview can be displayed when you need to compare the scrambled board with the target image, while the Hint button briefly highlights a piece that needs to move. You can also pause, restart, select unlocked levels, and adjust sound or motion settings.

How to Play
- Select Play from the main menu or choose an unlocked level from Level Select.
- The selected puzzle starts with a 60-second countdown.
- Identify the scrambled picture pieces and determine where each belongs.
- Tap/click one piece and then another piece to swap their positions.
- With a mouse, you can also drag a tile to another tile position to perform a swap.
- Use the Preview button when you need to compare the board with the completed picture.
- Use Hint when needed; it briefly highlights a piece that is currently in the wrong position.
- Keep arranging pieces until every tile matches its correct position.
- The game automatically checks the arrangement after each swap.
- If the timer reaches zero before the puzzle is solved, the level ends and you must restart it.
Winning & Losing Conditions
Winning Condition
A level is completed when every tile is in its correct position. The game then calculates stars and score based on moves and remaining time. Completing a level also unlocks the next level until all 24 levels are completed.
Losing Condition
You lose when the 60-second countdown reaches zero before the picture is correctly reconstructed. A Time's Up screen appears, allowing you to restart the level or return to the main menu.

Tips & Strategies
- Use the preview before making several swaps. It shows the target picture and helps you identify where misplaced pieces belong.
- Avoid unnecessary swaps. Every successful tile swap increases the move counter, and fewer moves contribute to a better result.
- Watch the timer closely. Three stars require both a sufficiently low move count and at least 20 seconds remaining.
- Use Hint selectively. The Hint button identifies a tile that is in the wrong position, but you still need to determine where to move it.
- Deselect a tile if needed. Selecting the same tile twice cancels the current selection without making a swap.
- For higher-grid levels, establish correct areas progressively. The 5×5 and 6×6 boards contain substantially more pieces, so minimizing exploratory swaps becomes increasingly important.
