About Nuts Puzzle: Color Sort

Nuts Puzzle: Color Sort is a color-sorting logic puzzle where you move the top nut from one screw to another. A nut can be placed on an empty screw or on a stack whose top nut has the same color, and the goal is to arrange every occupied screw into a complete four-nut color stack.

The primary objective is to sort the nuts by color so that every occupied screw contains exactly four nuts of the same color. Empty screws can be used as temporary spaces while rearranging the stacks.

Nuts Puzzle: Color Sort is a screw-and-nut sorting puzzle built around simple color-matching rules. Each level begins with colored nuts distributed across several screws, along with two empty screws that provide space for rearranging the stacks. Your task is to move nuts until every occupied screw contains four nuts of one color.

To make a move, click a screw containing nuts to lift its top nut, then click another screw as the destination. The destination must either be empty or have a matching color on top, and a screw cannot hold more than four nuts. An invalid destination produces a visual shake and the selected nut is released.

The game includes Undo, Reset, Extra, and Hint controls. Extra adds another empty screw, while Hint highlights a possible move. Completed levels show the number of moves used before you can continue to the next level. New levels progressively introduce more colors and use increasingly extensive mixing during level generation.

How to Play

  1. Start the game: The game loads directly into Level 1. If a saved game exists in the browser, the saved state is loaded instead.
  2. Select a screw: Click a screw containing at least one nut. Its top nut is lifted and becomes selected.
  3. Choose a destination: Click another screw to move the selected nut.
  4. Follow the placement rule: The destination must be empty or have a top nut of the same color. It must also have room for another nut.
  5. Continue sorting: Repeatedly rearrange the top nuts until each occupied screw contains four nuts of one color.
  6. Use available tools: Undo reverses a recorded move, Reset restarts the current level, Extra adds an empty screw, and Hint highlights a possible move.
  7. Avoid invalid moves: A full screw, a screw topped by a different color, or an empty screw selected as the source cannot be used for an invalid placement.
  8. Complete the level: The level finishes automatically when every occupied screw contains four nuts of a single color.
  9. After completion: A completion screen displays the number of moves and provides a Next Level button.

Winning & Losing Conditions

Winning Condition

You win when every occupied screw contains exactly four nuts and all four nuts on each occupied screw are the same color.

Losing Condition

There is no traditional game-over or life system. An invalid move is rejected, produces a visual shake, and clears the current selection; the player can continue playing.

Tips & Strategies

  • Use empty screws deliberately: The two empty screws are the main temporary storage spaces, so avoid filling both unless doing so helps expose the next useful nut.
  • Work from the top: Only the top nut of a screw can be moved, so plan around the colors currently exposed rather than the colors buried underneath.
  • Build matching stacks early: When several nuts of the same color become accessible, consolidating them reduces the number of obstructing pieces.
  • Watch the four-nut limit: A destination screw cannot accept a fifth nut, even when its color matches.
  • Use Undo for planning mistakes: Undo restores the previous screw arrangement and move count, making it useful when a move blocks access to an important color.
  • Use Hint when stuck: The Hint button identifies a currently valid source-to-destination move, which can help reveal the next direction without automatically making the move.
