About Free The Key
Free The Key is a level-based sliding-block puzzle where you rearrange wooden blocks to clear a path for the golden key. Drag each block along its permitted direction, work around the other pieces, and move the key to the exit on the right side of the board. Completing puzzles in fewer moves earns more stars.
The primary objective is to move the golden key block to the right edge of the puzzle board so it can exit.
Secondary goals are to:
- Complete each puzzle efficiently.
- Minimize the number of moves.
- Earn up to three stars based on the move count.
- Improve the recorded best move count for each completed level.
Free The Key is a wooden sliding-block puzzle built around one clear objective: move the golden key through a crowded board and out through the right-side exit. Each puzzle uses a 6x6 board with horizontal and vertical blocks that can be dragged along their respective orientations. Blocks cannot pass through one another or move outside the board, so solving a level requires arranging the surrounding pieces to create a route for the key.
The game contains 50 levels with progressively varied puzzle layouts. Your current level, move count, and best recorded move count are shown in the HUD. Completing a puzzle also awards between one and three stars depending on how your moves compare with that level's target.
If you enjoy strategy games, this puzzle focuses more on spatial planning than speed. Players can drag blocks directly with a pointer, use UNDO to reverse a move, or choose RESET to restore the current puzzle. A HINT button can automatically make the next solving move and can rewind incorrect moves when necessary. The pause menu provides options to resume, restart the level, or return to the main menu. Progress and best moves are stored locally in the browser.
How to Play
- Start the game by selecting PLAY from the main menu.
- The current puzzle appears as a grid containing the golden key and several wooden blocks.
- Drag a block to move it along its orientation. Horizontal blocks move horizontally, while vertical blocks move vertically.
- Blocks stop at the board boundaries or when another block prevents further movement.
- Rearrange the blocks until the path from the golden key to the right-side exit is clear.
- Move the golden key toward the right edge to complete the level.
- Watch the MOVES counter and try to solve the puzzle within the target move count for three stars.
- Use UNDO if you want to reverse your previous move, or RESET to restore the level.
- If you are stuck, HINT automatically performs a valid next move from a solvable path.
- After the key reaches the exit, the level-complete screen displays the move count and earned stars.
Winning & Losing Conditions
Winning Condition
A level is completed when the golden key reaches the right edge of the board and exits through the designated exit position.
Losing Condition
There is no traditional losing condition or game-over state. Players can make incorrect moves without ending the level and can use UNDO or RESET to recover.

Tips & Strategies
- Plan around block orientation. Horizontal pieces only move sideways and vertical pieces only move up or down, so identify which pieces can actually clear the key's route before moving them.
- Create space near the key first. The golden key is horizontal, so concentrate on removing blocks that occupy its row or prevent it from reaching the exit.
- Use UNDO instead of repeatedly rebuilding the puzzle. If a move blocks an important route, reverse it and try a different block arrangement.
- Watch the move counter when aiming for three stars. Each level has a target move count; staying at or below that target earns the three-star result.
- Use HINT when the position becomes difficult. The hint system can automatically make a valid solving move and can rewind incorrect moves when it cannot find a solution from the current position.
- Use RESET when experimentation has created an unhelpful arrangement. It returns the current level to its original layout.
